Dan Vilenski
Board Member & Former Chairman - Applied Materials Israel
Israeli National Nanotechnology Initiative (INNI)

Speech Title: "Firing Up Israel’s Nanotech Engine"
Speech Summary:

The Israel National Nanotechnology Initiative (INNI) is a joint program of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and Israel's Ministry of Trade and Industry. Established in 2001, the INNI sets national goals and priorities for advancing the role of nanotechnology in Israel.
Since its creation, the INNI has undertaken numerous activities that are critical to its mission. This includes comprehensive surveys on Israeli nanotech R&D, enhancing of basic education programs in science, and a highly focused 'nano-matchmaking' campaign. Its aim is to create new research and business partnerships in the fields of nanomaterials, nanobiotech, nanoelectronics and nanotech-based water purification; and to assist with leading investors and public funding organizations.

The most important of these initiatives is the ‘Triangle Donation Matching’ program, a unique 3-way donation matching program that is now the basis for funding Israel's major nanotech university research centers. The Triangle Donation Matching program, established in close coordination with Israel's universities and government, provides explicit matching funds from both the university and the government -- tripling the potential value of a benefactor's gift to an Israeli nanotech R&D center.

Israeli capabilities are growing, despite constraints in national funding and other resources. And Israel enjoys an excellent nanotech reputation globally, based on its historic success in technology development. But maintaining Israel's growth requires bold approaches for firing up its nanotech engine.

Speech Title: "Shortening 'Time to Money' for Nanotechnology Facilities"
Speech Summary:

Shortening "time to money" is a critical factor for any new Nanotechnology facility. Important lessons can be learned from the Semiconductor Industry where the cost of new chip-making facilities ranges from $3.5B to $7B. Delays in production cost Chipmakers over $100M per week. Collaborative project management reduces or eliminates those delays. Applying key lessons learned from the semiconductor industry can markedly improve time to money for other nanotechnology factories.
